Antimicrobial Use & Antimicrobial Resistance in Veterinary Sector: 25 years of surveillance in Norway

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the NORM
and NORM-VET surveillance programmes – making Norway one of the first countries to establish a comprehensive, integrated system for monitoring antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in both humans and animals.

For 25 years, joint efforts between the human and veterinary sectors have embodied the One Health approach and enabled effective AMR surveillance through NORM/NORM-VET. Annual data on resistance, antimicrobial use, and transmission have supported early detection, targeted interventions, and the maintenance of low resistance levels in Norway. This achievement reflects strong cross-sector collaboration among authorities, professionals, industry, and researchers.

As we mark this milestone, the report provides an overview of key developments and results, and outlines the role of NORM-VET in meeting current and future AMR challenges.
