Industrial gold mining has been expanding in Third World countries and is largely contributing to the devastation of vast areas of tropical forests, in addition to creating more inequalities and displacing people from their native land.
This is particularly troublesome in Colombia, whose politics are now almost entirely driven by large multinational corporations with no interest on the social, economic and environmental consequences of their operations to the country. On this presentation, a couple of cases current cases in Colombia will be used to exemplify how these corporations operate in undeveloped countries and the repercussions they have on the local inhabitants, economy and devastation of tropical habitats.
