Antimicrobial resistance is considered one of the greatest health threats of our time, and the use of antibiotics is the main driver of antibiotic resistance. The use of antibiotics in animals can increase the occurrence of antibiotic resistance in animals, but also in humans. Therefore, antibiotic resistance is a One Health issue. To monitor antibiotic use in animals, it is necessary to collect data and further analyse and present these.
In this project, we analyse and present data on sales and use of antibiotics for animals for the NORM/NORM-VET report. In addition, we manage and report data on behalf of Norway to the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH). We report on behalf of the Norwegian Medical Products Agency (DMP) and the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet).
In addition, we provide other knowledge-based support to the Norwegian Food Safety Authority on use of medicines for animals, with particular focus on data quality in the Veterinary Prescription Register. We also analyze and report data on sales and use of other veterinary medicinal products and respond to inquiries to NVI on the topic.
NVI is represented in international forums for antibiotic sales and use in animals, in the form of the European Sales and Use of Antimicrobials for Veterinary Medicine working group (ESUAvet WG) and the Transatlantic Taskforce on Antimicrobial Resistance (TATFAR).
