Ongoing research projects

  • FLO-BioSec

FLO-BioSec will map available data, conduct industry surveys and case studies, and initiate dialogue between the industry and regulatory authorities. The project will identify knowledge gaps and barriers to the implementation of cost-effective and environmentally friendly solutions for robust biosecurity in FLO systems. This is essential to ensure fish welfare, reduce disease outbreaks, and minimize environmental impact as the technology scales up.

    Project Period
    2026 - 2028
  • IMPACTFUL

IMPACTFUL (a EUP AH&W-prosjekt (EU Partnership on Animal Health & Welfare) develops integrated decision‑support strategies for animal disease and zoonoses control, combining epidemiology, economics, animal welfare, environment and public health. Using systems thinking and multi‑criteria decision analysis across terrestrial and aquaculture case studies, the project also delivers a Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) framework and targeted training for risk managers.

    Project Period
    2026 - 2028
  • NORHEDII

The project aims to develop a new interdisciplinary One Health training program that equips future professionals in human, animal, and environmental health to address interconnected global health challenges. A consortium led by the Arctic University of Norway collaborates with African and Norwegian partners to create MSc and PhD curricula, support student mobility, and build local capacity in Ethiopia and Malawi.

    Project Period
    2021 - 2027
    Område
    Antibiotikaresistens, Epidemiologi, Husdyrhelse, Zoonoser
  • Animal welfare and sustainable farming: promoting positive animal welfare in a context of sustainable farming

The overall aim is to investigate and further develop innovative husbandry practices with a clear potential to promote positive states of animal welfare practises in the EU while at the same time creating synergies with economic and environmental (GHG emission, pollution and biodiversity) sustainability. Traditionally, animal welfare research and legislation have focused on alleviating animal suffering and promoting good health. However, the absence of poor welfare does not necessarily mean that welfare is good. In recent years, research has increasingly shifted toward positive animal welfare and indicators of positive states.

    Project Period
    2026 - 2028
  • B -SAFE - Biosecurity for Sustainable Animal Farming in Europe (EUP AH&W)

B-SAFE aims to enhance external and internal biosecurity in European terrestrial and aquatic livestock production systems through comprehensive mapping, development of evidence-based protocols, deployment of digital tools, and stakeholder empowerment, with the ultimate goal of reducing the introduction and spread of infectious diseases, improving animal health and welfare, while limiting antimicrobial use.

    Project Period
    2026 - 2028
    Område
    Akvakultur, Antibiotikaresistens, Husdyrhelse, Fiskehelse
  • HEPINET

The HEPINET project will focus on the study of host–pathogen–environment interactions across multiple animal production systems such as ruminants, pigs, poultry, and aquatic species, along with wildlife reservoirs and vector-borne diseases.

    Project Period
    2026 - 2028
    Område
Antibiotikaresistens, Dyrevelferd, Mattrygghet, Molekylærbiologi, Virologi, Vilthelse, Akvakultur, Bioinformatikk, Husdyrhelse
  • Risk of spread of AMR and associated genes in veterinary pathogens - PAHW SOA28

The aim of this project is to generate knowledge that can be utilized in qualitative risk assessment answering questions about which ARGs occur and have the potential to be transferred to and between veterinary pathogens and disseminated in European livestock populations, and what can be done to reduce the risk of emergence and dissemination of novel and already present ARGs and resistant pathogens.

    Project Period
    2026 - 2028
  • Upcycling fish sludge to sustainable feed material: From environmental waste problems to sustainable feed solutions

The Up-Sludged project will increase knowledge on safe and sustainable use of fish sludge as feed for black soldier fly larvae, marine polychaetes and microalgae.

    Project Period
    2027 - 2029
    Område

  • BioFundament

BioFundament will establish the foundation for a system for evaluating the effect of the aquaculture industry's biosecurity work.

    Project Period
    2025 - 2028
    Område
    Akvakultur, Epidemiologi, Fiskehelse
  • Antibiotics in horse breeding

The study is a joint Norwegian and Swedish project which focuses on occurrence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic usage in horses in the two countries, particularly in stud farms and cases of inflammation in the uterus.
