The central Veterinary laboratory

The Central Veterinary Laboratory (CVL) of the Department of Animal Health and Livestock Development (DAHLD) in the Ministry of Agriculture supports the national task of controlling and eradication of animal and zoonotic diseases.

We also and enforce standards by fulfilling standards by fulfilling the following core functions:

  • Provision of sustainable animal disease diagnostic and investigation services in order to support field services.
  • Conducting demand driven animal health research work to generate new technologies in the livestock sector with emphasis on researchable areas that are commercially attractive and cost effective.
  • Protecting the consumer by providing veterinary public health services such as meat inspection.
  • Milk and milk products quality control and dairy farms, cooling centres and dairy factory inspections.
  • Provision of epidemiological data for decision and policy making.
  • Conducting relevant training for both field and laboratory staff as a way of capacity building to strengthen laboratory services in the country.

    Name: Joseph Mickeas Nkhoma

    Title: Veterinarian (BVSc, MBA)

    Role in project: Researcher and PhD Student

    Academic background: Veterinarian with a Masters degree and experience in Veterinary Public Health

    Experience: Veterinary surgeon and MBA holder with 20 years experience in veterinary practice, field and laboratory disease investigation, veterinary public health and public veterinary service delivery. He has experience in community participation and community based project monitoring.  Joseph is a member of the One Health National Team and coordinator of the Fleming Fund Project on antimicrobial Resistance for DAHLD. He is the Deputy Officer In-Charge for the CVL.
