BSE - bovine spongiform encephalopathy

Classical BSE (bovine spongiforme encephalopathy) has never been detected in Norway. In 2015, however, a case of atypical BSE (H-variant) was diagnosed.

The aim of the surveillance programme is to document freedom of classical BSE in the Norwegian cattle population.

2023

Brain samples from 6,190 bovine animals from 2,810 dairy herds and 965 beef cattle herds were submitted for examination in the surveillance and control programme for BSE in Norway 2023. A total of 292 samples were rejected. All the 5,898 tested brain samples were negative for BSE.
