BSE - bovine spongiform encephalopathy

Classical BSE (bovine spongiforme encephalopathy) has never been detected in Norway. In 2015, however, a case of atypical BSE (H-variant) was diagnosed.

The aim of the surveillance programme is to document freedom of classical BSE in the Norwegian cattle population.

2024

Brain samples from 6,254 bovine animals from 2,784 dairy herds and 946 beef catle herds were submited for examination in the surveillance and control programme for BSE in Norway 2024. A total of 363 samples were rejected because they contained unsuitable material. All the 5,891 tested brain samples were negative for BSE
