Scrapie

Some cases of atypical scrapie (Nor98) are detected every year, but the last case of classical scrapie was diagnosed in 2009.

The aim of the surveillance programme is to document the occurrence of scrapie in Norway.

2025

In 2025, 18,801 sheep and 542 goats were examined for prion protein scrapie (PrPSc). Thirteen sheep originating from twelve flocks were positive for Nor98 scrapie, also called atypical scrapie. All the goats were negative for PrPSc. In the period between 1981 and 2025, scrapie was diagnosed in 299 sheep flocks, of which 236 were Nor98 scrapie. In addition, Nor98 scrapie was diagnosed in one goat in 2006.
