Activity Afternoon Options

  1. Isfjordsafari to Fuglefjella and Hiorthamn (max. 22 people, cost 650 NOK/person). This is a 3 hour trip in a sturdy 26 foot rib: birdwatching at Fuglefjell were thousands of breeding seabirds roost (June-mid-August). From here the trip continues to Advent City and Hiorthamn where you can see the remains of the early mining enterprises. Warm drinks are served upon arrival at Hiorthamn. This trip is not advised for people with back problems or if pregnant as it can get a bit bumpy. Survival suits are provided.
  2. Endalen – a walk amongst arctic flora and fauna (400 NOK/person). After a short drive to Endalen, a guide will take you on an easy walk in the area. There is plenty of time to study the flora and fauna, which varies throughout the summer, including the rich bird life. Suitable for most people although the terrain can be uneven at times. Time taken approximately 3 hours.
  3. Fossil hunting at the foot of the Longyear glacier – accompanied by a pack-dog (400 NOK/person). This 3 hour tour starts at the hotel and heads up to Nybyen, where you meet the dog, before proceeding to Mine 4. Once in the moraine the hunt for fossils begins. You are allowed to take any fossils you find home with you. Stout walking boots are recommended as the terrain is uneven and a number of streams will need to be crossed.
  4. Kayaking to Hiorthamn (max. 16 people, 900 NOK/person). This is a 6 hour trip in sturdy double kayaks. The trip hugs the coastline and you do not need prior kayaking experience, since you will receive instructions prior to the start of the tour. Survival suits, boots and lifevests are provided.
