Utdannet veterinær med doktorgrad innen fiskehelse med støttefag i virologi og patologi. Tittel på doktorgradsavhandlingen fra 1999 er: Infectious pancreatic necrosis (IPN) in Atlantic salmon: Infection trials, pathogenesis and diagnostic methods. De viktigste arbeidsområdene er sykdomsdiagnostikk hos fisk og forskning på smittsomme sykdommer hos atlantisk laks, spesielt hjerte- og skjelettmuskelbetennelse (HSMB), pankreassykdom (PD) og kardiomyopatisyndrom (CMS).
