A multiresistant bacteria - MRSA (meticilin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) was found in a dog who had undergone surgery abroad. It is possible that the dog was contaminated in connection to the surgery. The National Veterinary Institute has found MRSA-bacteria in animals on three different cases previously in Norway.
The dog was infected with a human strain of the MRSA-bacteria. The MRSA-bacteria is zoonotic which means that it can be transmitted between humans and animals.
MRSA-cases in humans in Norway has been mandatory to report since 1995- The MRSA-situation in animals and humans are monitored annually through the surveillance-programme for antibiotic-resistance NORM/NORM-VET.
