Status Report on Avian Flue Dec. 7th
There several new reports on findings of high pathogenic avian influenzavirus subtype H5N1 in Europe the last month.
New Director

Confirmed VHS in Rainbow Trout
The National Veterinary Institute confirms diagnosis of VHS in Rainbow Trout from a fishfarm in the 'Møre og Romsdal' region. The origin of the virus is most probably from a marine fishspecies.
Suspicion of VHS
Tests of Rainbow Trout from a fishfarm in the region of Møre & Romsdal has given positive results for the VHS virus. Further investigations are needed to confirm the diagnosis. VHS is short for viral hemorrhagic septicemia. Norway has been free of the disease since 1974.
Scrapie Nor 98 in the county of Hordaland
The National Veterinary Institute in Norway has detected Scrapie of the Nor98 variant in a female sheep in the Sveio municipality of county Hordaland.
The disease was detected as a result of a random sampling in slaughtered animals older then 18 months, during sampling for the surveillance and control program for scrapie in small ruminants in Norway.
More Gyrodactylus in 'Lærdalselva'
Aproximately 10% of the smolt collected in 'Lærdalselva' was infected with the salmon parasite Gyrodactylus salaris. The findings were mainly in the lower part of the river.
Rabies Found in Finland
Rabies was found in a puppy imported from India to Finland. The puppy got sick one day upon entering the country, and was later euthanised. The finnish Food Safety Authority established the sample positive for rabies on the 12th of November.
Threatens salmonids
Proliferative Kidney Disease (PKD) has long been a problem in Europe. Now the disease is a growing problem also in Norwegian rivers.
Bird Flu Risk Considered Low
The probability that bird flu will reach Norway via wild birds from England is low, according to risk assessment. The high patogen variety (HPA1 H5) of the disease was established in England this week in a flock of turkeys in the south-east region.
Found Multiresistant Salmonella
Friday Nov 2nd the National Veterinary Institute (NVI) found Salmonella Typhimurium which is resistant to several antibiotics. The infected sample was from a calf in a herd in Dovre county, Oppland region. The Norwegian Institute of Public Health determined the isolate to be subtype DT104.
