Swine-disease detected
The National Veterinary Institute diagnosed yet another pig from a herd in the county of Hedmark with Postweaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome (PMWS). The disease was also found in February in a different herd in the same county.

Risk Assessment of Boar Import
National Veterinary Institute has made a risk assessment concerning the export of live boars or boar semen from Norway to Iceland. This is a prelimary report and comments are welcome until 25th of March.
New GMO technology increases foodsafety
National Veterinary Institute has developed a method to find genemodifications that previously has been virtually impossible to detect. The method can be important to ensure foodsafety and has received international attention.
Scrapie Nor 98 in the county of Rogaland
The National Veterinary Institute in Norway has detected Scrapie of the Nor98 variant in a female sheep in the Sandnes municipality of county Rogaland.
The disease was detected as a result of a random sampling in slaughtered animals older then 18 months, during sampling for the surveillance and control program for scrapie in small ruminants in Norway.
Avian influenza: Evaluation of risk, January 2008
The Norwegian Food Safety Authority made a request to the National Veterinary Institute to evaluate the risk of introduction of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus of subtype H5N1(HPAI H5N1) to Norway. This request was made on the background of the recent outbreaks in Poland and Germany as well as the recently implemented preparedness measures of our neighbouring countries, Denmark and Sweden.
Resistant "hospital"-bacteria in animals
Multiresistant staphylococci are more frequently found outside health institutions and hospitals. In several European countries these bacteria are found in animals, and in humans who have frequent contact with animals. This is not yet a problem in Norway, but research scientists fear a development similar to other European countries.
Unexpected mould species isolated from drinking water
Results from the project "Moulds in Norwegian drinking water" at the National Veterinary Institute demonstrated that moulds were commonly present in water from all parts of the investigated drinking water distribution systems. A total of 106 different mould species were identified, and the genera Trichoderma, Penicillium and Aspergillus were dominating. An unexpected result was the recovery of Aspergillus ustus, especially in ground water. This species is common in soil, but has, to our knowledge, not been isolated from drinking water previously. Aspergillus ustus seems to have the ability to adapt and survive at high temperatures since it was often isolated from hot-tap water. The recovery of A. ustus is of particular interest because it has been reported from infections in humans and appears to be an emerging pathogen in immunosuppressed patients.
Food Safety and Infection Distribution in Meat
A new report on the latest knowledge of the risk of infection distribution upon consumption of meat and meatproducts. The report is a collaboration between National Veterinary Institute and Norwegian Institute of Public Health.
