Salmonella Outbreak in Denmark
330 danish citizens has been confirmed with a salmonella-infection since the outbreak started in February. The number of patients has been high, but stable since May. Danish authorities are trying to establish the source of contamination. There are no known cases of this contamination in Norway according to the Food Authority and the Institute of Publich Health.
Gyrodactylus salaris in Beistadfjorden
The salmonparasite Gyrodactylus salaris has been a reccuring problem in the Beistad Fjord, and a number of treatment regimes has been applied. The National Veterinary Institute is in charge of planning and executing the project. The Beistad Fjord is close to the Trondheim Fjord and treatment is vital to avoid contamination in other watersystems.
Surveillance of Salmonella in Norway
The Salmonella situation in Norway has been surveilled by the National Veterinary Institute since 1995. Although the number of samples are high there is very little Salmonella found.

MRSA found in surveillance programme
The National Veterinary Insitute has detected a MRSA-bacteria in a pigherd as part of the surveillance-programme on MRSA in Norway. This group of bacteria is seldom found in Norway, while in some other european countries it is a growing problem in animal husbandry. The MRSA bacteria is resistant to some kinds of antibiotics.

Two sections and one department at the National Veterinary Institute has changed names.
Prestigious award for Tore Håstein
Veterinarian Tore Håstein is awarded The Federation of European Aquaculture Producers (FEAP) prize for 2008. His ardent commitment to combating fishdiseases in the fishfarm-industry throughout his scientific career made him this years worthiest candidate.
Campylobacter in season
Poultrymeat may contain the Campylobacter-bacteria, especially in summer. Be sure to prepare your food right and take proper care with hygiene, for example at the barbeque.
Musk Oxes Affected by Climatic Changes
Unusually hot and moist weather caused an outbreak of pneumonia in fall of 2006 amongst musk oxes at Dovre in Norway. Aproximately 25% of the musk oxes where killed by the disease. The musk-flock faces an uncertain future if a milder and more moist climate will cause similar disease-outbreaks.
Avian flue found in England
On 4 June, Defra confirmed that the strain of H7 Avian Influenza present in laying hens on a premises near Banbury in Oxfordshire is highly pathogenic. Investigations are ongoing. A Protection and Surveillance Zone is in place and bird gatherings and movement restrictions apply in the zone.
