Confirmed VHS in Rainbow Trout

The National Veterinary Institute confirms diagnosis of VHS in Rainbow Trout from a fishfarm in the 'Møre og Romsdal' region. The origin of the virus is most probably from a marine fishspecies.

The virus was found in specimen from the Rainbow Trout held in a seawater fishfarm in the 'Møre og Romsdal' region. This fish was released this autumn, and investigations were issued after abnormal behaviour was observed in some of the fish.

Previous authopsy revealed bleeding and anemia, and tests of organs with microscopy showed signs of disease that indicate the VHS-virus.

Virus-tests with PCR confirm the presence of VHS. The comparison with other isolates of the virus show that a marin fishspecies is the most likely source of the virus.

VHS is a class A disease. The case is reported to the Norwegian Food Authority. It was last found in Norway in 1974.
